FARAPEJ was created in 1991 to improve the functioning of justice and to limit the destructive effects of prison.
It is a federation of associations; it gathers 70 associations spread all over the French territory, which develop various actions to improve the penal and penitentiary system. These associations act with detainees, prison leavers, relatives of detainees, victims of criminal offenses, and the public through information and awareness actions.

To allow detainees and their relatives to better know and exercise their rights and obligations, the association has set up the ARAPEJ toll-free number enabling you to make a free, anonymous, and confidential call.
If you are a detainee, you can reach this number from the prison via the detention phone points by dialing +33 800 870 745.
If you are a relative of a detainee, a person leaving prison, or a professional/volunteer accompanying a detainee, you can contact the toll-free number via another line: +33 1 43 72 98 41.
You can then receive information about your legal situation, rights, and obligations. The association will be able to direct you to the appropriate people or authorities to assist you in your efforts.
Activities
- Support of member associations in their actions in the field
- Training of members of partner associations and actors in the prison-justice field
- Coordination of projects, in particular, the European project RESCALED and STEP
- Informing the public on prison and penal issues through colloquiums, study days, communication actions, university studies, etc.
- Elaboration of proposals to the public authorities to improve the functioning of the justice system, etc.
